RYSBRACK, John Michael
(b. 1694, Antwerpen, d. 1770, London)

John Barnard

1744
Marble, height 43 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This lively bust is one of Rysbrack's few busts of children. The sitter was the son of William Barnard (1696-1768) who held a succession of ecclesiastical posts before became bishop of Derry.

Noteworthy is the boy's fashionable costume, a Hussar's uniform. The fad for this Hungarian costume was born out of British sympathy for Hungary and Vienna in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48).
