The most important of all his commissions for Federico Gonzaga in Mantua, Titian executed a series of portraits of the Eleven Caesars in the years 1536-40. The series constituted the main element in the decoration of the room in the Ducal Palace called the Camerino dei Cesari, one of a suite with themes from ancient history under the overall supervision of Giulio Romano. The Camerino was stripped of its paintings and sculptures in 1627, and Titian's Caesars were destroyed by fire in Spain in 1734. Their compositions are recorded in a number of graphic and painted copies.
