This picture represents one of the five illustrations designed by Jacques-Philip-Joseph de Saint-Quentin for the five acts of 'The mad day, or the marriage of Figaro' (La Folle journée, ou le mariage de Figaro) by Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais.

The illustration for Act III depicts a man seated in a chair on a stepped platform holds an audience, two pointing men stand in the foreground.

The etching was created c. 1784 by Claude-Nicolas Malapeau (1755-1803).
