Hercules and Antaeus

1564-65
Fresco
Sala d'Ercole, Rocca Sanvitale, Sala Baganza

With such paintings as painted tapestry, painting within a painting it became possible to use the flat surface of a ceiling vault for narrative depictions. Given a corresponding design of the fictive architecture of a vault structure it became possible to combine an illusory extension of the room upward with an outward extension. Raphael's ingenious idea in the Vatican loggias was applied by Samacchini in Sala Baganza.
