Monument to Paolo Giovio

1560
Marble
Cloister, San Lorenzo, Florence

Preceded by a medal, coined in 1552, the marble statue depicting the bishop Paolo Giovio was completed in 1560. It was placed in the cloister of the basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence in 1574, near the gateway to the Laurentian Library. The statue is framed by imposing pillars and placed within a niche of dark marble. It shows stylistic resemblances with some Michelangelo examples and with the compositional formulas adopted by contemporary Florentine sculptors such as Jacopo Sansovino and Bartolomeo Ammanati.

Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) was a physician, historian, biographer, and prelate, Bishop of Nocera de' Pagani from 1528. He was the personal physician for Cardinal Giulio di Giuliano de' Medici (the future Pope Clement VII).
