The project for building a palace on the site of a pre-existing complex of modest buildings was commissioned from Jacopo Sansovino by the magistrate of San Marco, Giovanni Dolfin. A wide portico with six arcades resting on pillars, the ground floor being used for storage, acts as the foundation for the two upper floors, marked by the continuous balcony and the central mullioned window. Contemporaries praised the internal courtyard rather than the façade. However, the palace was completely rebuilt at the end of the 18th century, with the exception of the façade, and the courtyard was destroyed.
