Sansovino designed and built a row of shops and warehouses along the shore of the Grand Canal, begun in 1554 and known as the Fabbriche Nuove di Rialto. This building provided a dignified façade to the processional route along the Grand Canal, encouraged by the fact that important visitors at this period were often housed further upstream, in the palace now known as the Fondaco dei Turchi. The simple three-storey façade of the Fabbriche Nuove - rustic, Doric, and Ionic - is enlivened by an oblique angle along its repetitive frontage.
