Otto Wagner was the leading architect of fin-de-siécle Vienna and a friend of Gustav Klimt and Josef Hoffmann. According to Arthur Roessler, Wagner volunteered to pose for what was to have been the first of a series of portraits of Viennese celebrities but grew tired after several sittings and asked Schiele to obtain another model for the body.
