Krumau - Crescent of Houses (The Small City V)

1915
Oil on canvas, 110 x 140 cm
Israel Museum, Jerusalem

In spring 1911 Schiele moved to Krumau (now Ceský Krumlov, Czech Republic), his mother's native town. There he painted small views of the city in which he disregarded topographical accuracy in order to emphasize the enervating effect on him of the apparently idyllic medieval town. Houses are often seen from an exaggeratedly elevated viewpoint as if laid out on a chessboard and are grouped in virtually abstract configurations.
