In this engraving Schongauer treats the iconic Crucifixion type with only Mary and John standing beneath the cross. it is reminiscent of Rogier van der Weyden's late treatments of the subject. But the severity of the icon is overwhelmed by the rich pictorial effects achieved in the details of the composition.
