The son of a sculptor, in 1818 Shchedrin was sent as a pensionnaire at the Académie de France in Rome. In the peninsula he earned a great reputation as a landscape artist. One of the most appealing nineteen-century Russian painters, Shchedrin was one of the first to paint from nature in Italy, expressing with originality the vision of southern light.
