Silvestre's engraving shows the garden front of the palace in Versailles, designed by Louis Le Vau (1612-1670). The engraving gives a good idea of the maain terrace which led from the palace downwards towards the gardens on the west side, planned and made by André Le Nôtre (1613-1700) the landscape architect and gardener of King Louis XIV.
