Against the pyramid of mottled mauvish-grey marble, Montmorin reclines on a cushion of brownish-red, and the same warm marble is used for the thick surrounding draperies with yellow fringes. His vivid, penetrating face - the pupils of the eyes drilled very deep - is the focal point of the whole monument. Though conventionally reclining to convey that he is dead, Montmorin is throughout invested with keen vitality, with his expressive pointing hand, the sharp folds of his robes, and his foot projecting over the edge of the black marble tomb, suggestive of stepping back into life again.
