Apotheosis of St. Fridolin

1751
Fresco
Fridolinsmünster, Bad Säckingen

In the frescoes of Fridolinsmünster, Spiegler integrated the steps of a staircase into a sort of "heavenly architecture." He was given the commission for the painting in 1751. In the Apotheosis of St. Fridolin, the staircase winds upwards out of the stucco of the vault and is continued by curving paths of cloud, only to reappear on the opposite side where steps again desced toward the stucco and a more earthly realm.
