In his medallic profile portrait, Filippo Strozzi (1428-1491) is depicted substantially older than in his marble bust by Benedetto da Maiano. The wrinkles across his forehead have multiplied and the skin along his jowls and beneath his chin has slackened. Once attributed to Benedetto da Maiano on the basis of his other portraits of Filippo, the medal is now associated with the late fifteenth-century medalist Niccolò di Forzore Spinelli (Niccolò Fiorentino), whose attributed oeuvre includes medals with similar bird reverse. On the finely executed reverse, a molting falcon splays its wings in a pastoral landscape. The bird is a play on the Strozzi name, as "strozziere" is Italian for falconer.
