STORCK, Abraham
(b. 1644, Amsterdam, d. 1708, Amsterdam)

Fortified Mediterranean Port

1676
Oil on panel, 47 x 63 cm
Private collection

The picture shows a fortified Mediterranean port with an obelisk and a galley moored nearby. It is an imaginary representation, Abraham Storck's knowledge of Italian architecture and landmarks likely arose from the travels of his artistic contemporaries, including Jan Asselijn and Jan Weenix, who brought their experiences back to Amsterdam by way of their paintings.
