The sitter is luxuriously dressed in a brownish red gown trimmed with black velvet. Her headdress is elaborately decorated with geometric pattern, her jewelry is as extravagant as her dress. The identity of the woman in not known, her elaborate and costly attire indicate that she belongs to the elite echelons of society. In fact, the portrait stands as an important document of German high fashion and taste in the first part of the sixteenth century.
Although portraits of women facing left are often matched by ones of a male sitter - a betrothed or a husband - facing right, no pair has surfaced for this portrait which is probably an independent painting.
