The wealthy Duke of Landshut repeatedly renovated and expanded the medieval buildings in Burg Trausnitz during the 15th century. The outer defensive ring of walls were heightened and extended for the defensive towers. Duke Louis X of Bavaria furnished the castle in 1516 in the south German Renaissance style, though few examples remain today.
In October 1573 Sustris was summoned to the court at Landshut by Crown Prince William of Bavaria (from 1579 Duke William V). At first he was employed as a portrait painter and copyist, but he gradually became William's 'artistic director', thanks to his manifold talents. He produced designs for goldsmiths, tapestry-weavers, sculptors, stucco workers and, occasionally, work of an architectural nature. It is not certain to what extent Sustris was involved in architectural design at the Landshut court. He definitely designed the arcading in the castle courtyard at Burg Trausnitz (from 1578).
