This drawing in the shape of a lunette is the design for the fresco adorning the back wall in the western hall of the rectangular Grottenhof in the Munich Residenz. Converting the old residence into an Italian style villa with gardens demanded the implementation of architectural, sculptural and painting projects on a huge scale, the plans for which were made by Sustris. Almost nothing now remains of the work he brought to fruition and only drawings and copies made after them preserve the Ovidian fairy-tale world once built.
