SUVÉE, Joseph-Benoit
(b. 1743, Brugge, d. 1807, Roma)

The Combat of Mars and Minerva

Oil on canvas, 143 x 104 cm
Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille

In 1771 Suvée's The Combat of Mars and Minerva was the first-prize winner in the competition for the Prix de Rome. Jacques-Louis David came second with his painting of the same subject. Suvée's painting was more balanced and elegant than David's unconvincing effort.
