Summer

1872
Oil on canvas, 76 x 104 cm
Nationalgalerie, Berlin

During his stay in Paris, Thoma became friends with Arnold Böcklin, whose most carefree art, as in his Campagna Landscape, is seen again in Thoma's Summer of 1872. A cascading brook meanders through a field of wildflowers with music-making lovers at the lower left.
