Design for Apollo

c. 1757
Pencil, wash over black crayon, 207 x 163 mm
Victoria and Albert Museum, London

This drawing is a study for the figure of Apollo painted on the wall of the room of the Olympian Gods in the Foresteria of the Villa Valmarana. In this room the primary Olympian gods, part of the standard canon of villa decoration since the sixteenth century, are depicted in larger and smaller groupings. Tiepolo prepared for the paintings in a series of spirited studies.
