God the Father

Formerly attributed to Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, the painting has lately been defined in art literature as the work of Giovanni Domenico. Today research can clearly differentiate between the activities of the two masters, avoiding the method formerly applied of simply classifying every weaker Tiepoloan achievement as the work of the younger master. The correct attribution of the God the Father — presumably a fragment — in the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts to Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo rests on the recognition of the specific characteristics of colouring and form in the works of the elder and the younger artists.
