This scene is on the wall of the room of Carnival Scenes in the Foresteria of the Villa Valmarana.
This painting takes up a theme that was a specialty of Pietro Longhi. It refers to a popular public spectacle in which - under the protection of masks - all classes of Venetian society took part. The performance of the charlatan, who entertained his public with buffoonery, tricks, and musical interludes, was part of Venice's Carnival.
