Fresco
Villa Valmarana ai Nani, Vicenza

This scene is on the wall of the room of Carnival Scenes in the Foresteria of the Villa Valmarana.

Two painted flights of steps on the end wall, executed by the virtuosic Girolamo Mengozzi Colonna, give this room the character of a vestibule. A black servant pauses on the painted steps with a tray, turning his gaze toward the entry door, while a chained monkey on the steps of the opposite wall is turning somersaults. The other two walls present three scenes with masquerades (Minuet of Pantalone and Columbine; Mondo Novo; and the Charlatan) conceived in the manner of panel paintings.
