Family Meal

1757
Fresco
Villa Valmarana ai Nani, Vicenza

This scene is on the wall of the room with Rustic Scenes in the Foresteria of the Villa Valmarana.

Within curious frames interwoven with rings that were painted in advance by Girolamo Mengozzi Colonna, and almost seem to open up the walls of the space to the surrounding countryside, Tiepolo painted some of his most compelling works. One is the Family Meal, depicting the head of the family seated at an outdoor table, his youngest son in his arms, and his wife eating standing up, her plate resting on her belly, swollen with yet another pregnancy.
