TINO DI CAMAINO
(b. ca. 1285, Siena, d. ca. 1337, Napoli)

Monument of Bishop Antonio degli Orsi (detail)

1321
Marble, height 132 cm
Duomo, Florence

In 1321 Tino di Camaino completed and signed the - since then dismembered - monument to Antonio degli Orsi, Bishop of Florence. The seemingly original motif of the dead, seated figure of the bishop, the head developed and refined through the experience gained in the previous effigies to which it is so closely related, is perhaps the most powerful and moving achievement in Tino's whole career.
