Toulouse-Lautrec often painted his friends and other figures in his immediate social circle. One such person was the young woman depicted in the present painting. This working girl, Carmen Gaudin, fascinated the artist with her red hair and white skin, and he painted her many times. In this version she is represented with her head down, her eyes covered by her hair and her face in shadow.
