The Grand Box

1896
Oil and gouache on cardboard, 56 x 48 cm
Private collection

This painting shows two women and a man in a very respectable pose, watching a play. But the man in top hat, with his swollen face, was none other than Tom, the Rothschilds' coachman. The woman in the centre was the dancer and actress Emilienne d'Alençon, while the other was known as Madame Armande to her intimate clients, and was the manager of a lesbian bar in the Rue Pigalle.
