Le Star was an English sailors' inn in the harbour at Le Havre. Miss Dolly worked as a singer and barmaid there, and in July 1899 Lautrec was a frequent guest.
The portrait of the Englishwoman is a masterpiece of portraiture. The brush strokes are applied with speed and precision. The palette is of rare subtlety. delicate pinks mediate between the blue of the dress and the yellow-orange of the hair. The picture has the character of a mosaic composed of different motifs in the form of strokes and dots. This is Lautrec at his greatest, and most modern.
