Three panels from the Santa Croce Altarpiece1325-28Tempera on wood Staatliche Museen, Berlin | |
These panels come from the now dismembered altarpiece painted by Ugolino di Nerio for the Franciscan church of Santa Croce, Florence. They consist of three main tier panels with three upper tier panels above them. It should be noted, that the arrangement of the panels are not conform with that in the nineteenth-century drawing attributed to Humbert de Superville. It is thought that the drawing is in essence accurate. The panels in Berlin represent St John the Baptist and above him Sts Matthias and Elizabeth of Hungary (left); St Paul and above him Sts Matthew and James the Less (centre); St Peter and above him Sts James the Greater and Philip. |
