This panel comes from the upper tier above the main tier of the now dismembered altarpiece painted by Ugolino di Nerio for the Franciscan church of Santa Croce, Florence. According to a nineteenth-century drawing attributed to Humbert de Superville, it was situated above the spandrel angels (National Gallery, London) and the half-length figure of St Francis (now lost).

St Simon (on the left) carries a red book, St Thaddeus a white scroll.
