UGOLINO DI NERIO
(active 1317, Siena, d. 1339/49, Siena)

Sts Bartholomew and Andrew

1325-28
Egg tempera on wood, 70 x 62 cm
National Gallery, London

This panel comes from the upper tier above the main tier of the now dismembered altarpiece painted by Ugolino di Nerio for the Franciscan church of Santa Croce, Florence. According to a nineteenth-century drawing attributed to Humbert de Superville, it was placed above the half-length figure of St Paul (Staatliche Museen, Berlin).

St Bartholomew (on the left) is holding a white scroll, and St Andrew carries a red book.
