UGOLINO DI NERIO
(active 1317, Siena, d. 1339/49, Siena)

Crucifixion with the Virgin and St John the Evangelist

1330-35
Tempera on panel, 135 x 90 cm
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid

This panel has been cut down along the bottom edge, originally the Virgin and St John would have been represented full-length. This work is now widely recognised as a key work for our understanding of Ugolino, a pupil and follower of Duccio.
