VELDE, Adriaen van de
(b. 1636, Amsterdam, d. 1672, Amsterdam)

Frozen Canal with Skaters and Hockey Players

1668
Oil on canvas, 23 x 30 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

This painting belongs to a group of winter scenes, rare but of excellent quality, that Adriaen van de Velde painted in his late period. The subject of this picture could be the sky, grey-white, taking up three-quarters of the canvas. The frozen canal (or river?) is brought to life by several skaters and hockey players. These small figures are emblematic of van de Velde's work. The painter had become an expert in them and was often asked by his peers to handle the figures and animals in their pictures.
