VELDE, Esaias van de
(b. 1587, Amsterdam, d. 1630, Den Haag)

Riders on a Path between Ruins and a High Bank

1624
Oil on canvas laid on panel, 42 x 36 cm
Private collection

The free handling and spirited brushwork in this painting are akin to the large body of drawings produced by Van de Velde (over 200 are known) which record the artist's surroundings with a matter-of-factness that put him on par with the great landscape specialists of the first half of the seventeenth century.
