VERELST, Dutch family of painters

Pieter Harmensz. Verelst (c. 1618-c. 1678) was a pupil of Gerrit Dou. He was the father of Herman Verelst (1641-1702), a portrait painter, Simon Verelst (1644-1721), who was renowned for his flower paintings, and Johannes Verelst (1648-1734). The brothers moved to London to practice. Herman's daughter Maria Verelst (1680-1744) followed in his footsteps and enjoyed success in England, while Herman's son Cornelis Verelst (1667-1734) was the father of William Verelst (active 1732-1756), who was probably the most accomplished portrait painter in the family.
