Johannes (Jan) Verkolje I, the son of a locksmith, specialized in genre scenes set in richly furnished interiors, although he also painted mythological scenes and portraits. Among his followers were his two sons, Nicolaas Verkolje and Johannes Verkolje II (d. 1760).
