VERKOLJE, Johannes I
(b. 1650, Amsterdam, d. 1693, Delft)

Elegant Company on a Terrace

c. 1680
Graphite, pen and brown ink, brush and gray ink, 222 x 205 mm
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

In large part self-taught, Verkolje drew in various media and styles and was influenced a range of artists, including Caspar Netscher, the highly successful genre painter and portraitist in The Hague. This drawing is reminiscent of Netscher's compositions of elegant companies.
