This canvas represents a view of Avignon, from the right bank of the Rhône near Villeneuve. It is Claude-Joseph Vernet's only recorded view of his birthplace, the city of Avignon. It was exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1759, and was highly admired. In 1781 it was engraved by Pietro Antonio Martini.
