The many antiquities uncovered at the villa that Cardinal Ludovisi created in the 17th century on the site of ancient Rome's celebrated Sallustian Gardens made it a place of pilgrimage for artists, writers, and travelers. Vernet, who worked in Rome for 20 years, depicted himself in the right foreground with his wife and young son. The artist and a friend are discussing a sketch, perhaps one of the lost studies in oils made on location that endow Vernet's finest landscapes with the precision of immediate observation.
