VERNET, Claude-Joseph
(b. 1714, Avignon, d. 1789, Paris)

Girls Bathing at the Seaside

1761
Oil on canvas, 50 x 74 cm
Residenzgalerie, Salzburg

This painting is characteristic of the extensive oeuvre of the brothers Claude Joseph and Jean Antoine Vernet. Inspired by the ancient ruins of Rome, the coastal towns and the luminous atmosphere of Italy, they created romantic port and seascapes as well as night pieces and shipwrecks.

This high-quality landscape with an Italian atmosphere is signed and dated "J. Vernet . P. Romae 1761". However, the painting cannot be conclusively attributed to one particular brother, since both signed their paintings "J. Vernet".
