VERNET, Claude-Joseph
(b. 1714, Avignon, d. 1789, Paris)

Italian Harbour Scene

1747
Oil on canvas, 121 x 171 cm
Private collection

The painting depicts an Italian harbour scene in the morning fog, with fishermen departing in the foreground. The signed and dated canvas was executed while Vernet was in Rome, where he had settled in 1734. His paintings from this period were mostly imaginary landscapes or coastal views incorporating realistic landmarks and figures suggesting southern Italy.

There is another smaller version of this painting, also in a private collection.
