Martyrdom of St Sebastian (detail)

1565
Oil on canvas
San Sebastiano, Venice

This picture of the title saint suffering his gruesome fate bound to a frame is dramatically incorporated into the crowded detail of the composition. Compared with its counterpart, the choreography of the figures looks occasionally rather stiff and calculated. Moreover, some of the heads were clearly carried out by assistants. A specific feature of Veronese's technique is the combination of strongly contrasting oranges and greens.
