Vignon probably worked in Rome from around 1617 to 1623. This painting is based on Caravaggio's Martyrdom of St Matthew in the Contarelli Chapel in San Luigi dei Francesi.The domineering executioner seen from the front seems to be a direct borrowing. Yet Vignon's picture is more of a commentary on the earlier work than a copy. | |
