This painting is one of four canvases with typological and stylistic similarities (all in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna) which were executed for Emperor Rudolf II. Hans Vredeman de Vries, whose sojourn at the court of Prague took place between 1596 and 1598, presented also Rudolf II with architectural designs for the imperial palace.
