Italian Comedians (detail)

c. 1720
Oil on canvas
National Gallery of Art, Washington

At the centre of the painting is Pierrot, standing resplendent in a white costume and gazing out with an ambiguous expression. He is positioned directly in front of a doorway in the stone wall forming the back of the stage; visible just beyond are trees and sky.
