WATTEAU, French family of painters

Antoine Watteau was one of the foremost exponents of the Rococo style in French painting, creating an entirely distinctive pictorial world. His nephew Louis Watteau and the latter's son François Watteau (both known as Watteau de Lille) were provincial painters who dominated the artistic life of Lille in the later 18th century and the early 19th.
