Sts Margaret and Apollonia

1445-50
Oil on oak panel, 51,5 x 27,5 cm
Staatliche Museen, Berlin

Originally, this panel was probably the right wing of a triptych. St Margaret is standing in the remains of the body of the dragon that had swallowed her - an end of her robe is still hanging out of its mouth; the saint overcame the monster through the power of the Cross. Apollonia's attribute relates to her martyrdom, when her teeth were pulled out with pincers.
