From the early 1620s Willaerts painted a number of pictures which fuse biblical narrative with marine and landscape painting. The Miracle on the Beach of Gennesaret depicts a scene of Jesus healing the sick, taken from the Gospel of Saint Matthew. Willaerts painted this episode on several occasions between 1609, the earliest dated example, and the 1640s.
